JamPlay is a comprehensive course of video-based online guitar lessons for both electric and acoustic guitars. Justin Guitar

Justin Guitar is a site offering a course of completely free video-based guitar lessons. It is run by Justin Sandercoe, a professional guitarist and teacher, and the lessons cover such core techniques as scales, arpeggios, chords, aural training and rhythm. Tab is available for various well known songs, and there’s also some extra material available to his newsletter subscribers.

Learn & Master Guitar

Learn and Master Guitar is produced by Legacy Learning Systems, the creators of a variety of ‘teach yourself’ courses in different areas. It is a multi-media course that takes you to an advanced level by following a logical progression of lessons. These are taught by professional guitarist and teacher Steve Krenz, and they cover electric, acoustic, classical, jazz, blues, country and funk styles, with the emphasis on giving you the skills to eventually develop your own signature style. Learn and Master Guitar is presented via a book and a set of DVDs, and also includes a set of CDs to jam to. It is available in two formats – the original version, which costs $119, and the expanded version, which costs $149.

Learn Guitar Quick

Learn Guitar Quick claims to teach complete beginners to learn guitar by ear and be able to play any song in eight weeks or less. The emphasis is on keeping things simple – teaching you the core skills you need to know, but not overwhelming you with material or tools that you don’t need to get started. You’ll learn strumming patterns, tab (but not notation), chords, scales and more, and the material is presented in written illustrated format with audio clips, all of which you can download to your PC. Learn Guitar Quick currently sells for a one time payment of $39.95.

Music Master Pro

Music Master Pro differs from most of the other courses listed here in that it caters not only to guitarists but to bassists and drummers too. The site offers downloadable video instruction covering a large selection of guitar, bass and drum techniques and styles. There is also bonus material that covers the piano and violin. For guitarists, the lessons include rock guitar, as well as classical and jazz styles, and more. Plus you also get jam tracks, software and other learning aids, and new material is added regularly. Music Master Pro has a one-time fee of $29.95, which gives you access to all of the music lessons on the site (not just the guitar lessons).

My Simple Guitar

With My Simple Guitar, the focus is on getting you playing simple songs very quickly – within 60 minutes in fact, according to the author. Now obviously you won’t learn a huge amount in this time, and it will take much longer to develop real skills, but you may be able to learn some basic chords and strumming patterns, and being able to play a song or two will give many people the incentive they need to keep going with more in-depth tuition from elsewhere. My Simple Guitar includes illustrated written instructions and videos, and costs $14.97.

Outstanding Guitar

Outstanding Guitar is a text- and video-based course for acoustic and electric guitar from guitarist and teacher Cory Lynn. It covers the basic techniques you’ll need to play guitar to an intermediate level, and also provides advice on songwriting and lead guitar playing. Outstanding Guitar also has jam tracks to play along with, so you can get a taste of playing with a band. This course costs a one-off fee of $49.95.

Play Guitar Guides

Play Guitar Guides is a series of five downloadable books that claims to help adult beginners to learn to play the guitar. The books cover playing the guitar, chords and scales, making a living as a musician, and tuning the guitar. There is also a bonus guide that teaches you to read musical notation. Play Guitar Guides has a single fee of $19.95.

Pro Guitar Method – Pro Speed Picking

Pro Guitar Method is aimed at guitarists who have a bit of experience, but who wish to improve their skills and advance to the next level. It is taught by R.S. Rasnick, a professional guitarist and teacher, and currently focuses on Pro Speed Picking. This course covers a wide variety of picking techniques, and includes audio recordings of the exercises, so you know how they should sound. There is also a selection of bonuses, including a software metronome, tuner, MIDI loops and jam tracks. Pro Guitar Method’s downloadable Pro Speed Picking course costs $17.

Pro Guitar Tips

Pro Guitar Tips is a downloadable course from professional guitarist and teacher Pete Williamson, who has played for Pete Murray. The lessons are fully illustrated, and feature over 200 audio clips to show you how the music should sound. You’ll learn all the essential techniques necessary for becoming a skilled guitarist, and the course covers both rhythm and lead guitar, and many different musical styles. There is also a selection of bonuses, covering topics such as getting a great tone, effects, home recording, songwriting and more. Pro Guitar Tips is available in three formats: the Bronze course, featuring basic material for beginners (this costs $17), the Silver course, featuring solo and rhythm guitar technqiues, scales, jam tracks and more ($37), and the Gold course, which has more advanced material, as well as video lessons ($97).

Team Method Guitar

Team Method Guitar is a high quality course from Ben Edwards, the developer of Jamorama. The instruction is provided by a team of guitarists, so you can learn from people with expertise in a diverse range of guitar skills and styles. It starts by covering the basics, such as chords, scales, rhythm, reading TAB, before progressing to lead guitar techniques, playing by ear and more advanced skills. There is also a section which focuses exclusively on acoustic guitar playing. Live support is also available if you have questions or run into diffculties. Unlike many of the courses listed here, Team Method Guitar is available in a physical format (as well as the usual downloads), and you get printed books, CDs with jam tracks and ear training exercises, DVDs with video lessons, chord reference material, guitar software and a lot more. The complete set of Team Method Guitar books, DVDs, CDs and software costs $209. Alternatively, you can purchase the downloadable version of the course (which is the same, other than the format) for $97.

The Beginners Guide To Unlocking The Guitar

The Beginners Guide To Unlocking The Guitar is developed by professional guitarist Jared Krebs, and is aimed at both complete beginners and those with some experience who aren’t making the progress they desire. The Guitar Suite is a site which offers a variety of free resources to help you learn to play the acoustic guitar. There’s also advice on how to practice correctly, music theory and songwriting. The lessons will help you to get started as a beginner, although they don’t go into a lot of depth. 20 Easy Strumming Songs

Professional guitar teacher Mike Herberts’ 20 Easy Strumming Songs is not a course of lessons as such – rather, it aims to help you build your repertoire of songs, so you’ll always have something to play if people ask. The songs are mostly classic rock and some country and folk tunes, although there are some more modern pieces in the selection too (a full list is on the site). You get song sheets with lyrics and chords, access to webpages where you can play along with recordings of the songs while following the chords and lyrics onscreen, as well as videos which demonstrate exactly what you need to do. According to the site, the songs are normally sold as two sets of 10 songs, but are currently priced at $39.97 for all 20.

99 Cent Guitar Lessons

As the name suggests, 99 Cent Guitar Lessons offers guitar lessons that can be purchased individually for payments starting at 99 cents (or more – the prices vary). Lessons are available in a variety of styles (jazz, country, rock, blues etc) and specific techniques. The lessons are delivered in video and audio form, and most include PDFs with the relevant tab and notation.
